What stained glass class should a complete beginner take first?
Copper Foil Level 1. It is our entry-level class, needs no previous experience, runs four hours at our Centennial studio near Denver, and you leave with a finished suncatcher you made yourself.
Copper Foil Level 1 is the beginner pathway at our studio, designed for first-time students who want to learn cutting, foiling and soldering inside a professional stained glass studio. In four hours you'll cover all three foundational techniques, guided by a working artist.
Everything after this class builds on it: Level 2 adds larger panels and Level 3 moves into more advanced construction. Classes stay small (max 6) so you get real attention, and all glass, tools and materials are provided — just show up.
Here is how the four hours actually run. Your instructor demonstrates scoring and breaking first, then you cut your own pieces from the pattern. Next comes the grinder, where edges are shaped until the pieces fit each other rather than the drawing. Then copper foil is burnished onto every edge, the piece is tacked together, and the last stretch is soldering a smooth bead on both sides before cleaning and finishing.
Six students is a deliberate cap, not a marketing line. Soldering irons run hot, the grinder needs supervision, and the difference between a tidy solder bead and a lumpy one is usually a two-minute correction at the right moment — which only happens if the instructor can reach everyone. The mistakes we correct most often are pressing too hard on the cutter instead of letting the wheel score, over-grinding a piece until the gap widens, and lifting the iron too slowly so the solder pulls into peaks.
You do not need to prepare anything. Wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting flux on; we supply aprons, safety glasses, cutters, grinders, irons, glass and foil. Everyone leaves with a finished, cleaned piece the same day.
